Morocco’s August price rise: what the headline figure misses

Morocco’s consumer price index rose by 0.8% in August 2026 compared with July, according to the High Commission for Planning. Food prices increased by 0.9% and non-food prices by 0.7%, while fuel recorded a sharp 9.8% monthly rise.
Household baskets tell different stories
Fish and seafood, as well as milk, cheese and eggs, rose by 2.8%. Meat increased by 2.2%, while fruit prices fell by 1.9%. A national average cannot fully describe each family’s experience because spending patterns and location differ.
Monthly and annual changes are not the same
The August increase did not mean the index was higher than a year earlier. It was actually 0.3% below its August 2025 level. Understanding purchasing power requires a clear distinction between monthly movement, annual change and the specific expenses faced by each household.
